If any group of individuals (besides the Cowboy) were responsible for the expansion of America and the development of the Old West, it was the soldiers of the United States Cavalry. While Hollywood – through Errol Flynn’s Custer in They Died with Their Boots On and John Ford’s and John Wayne’s Cavalry Trilogy – romanticized the Cavalry, the truth was more complex, and at times both extremely dull and very disturbing. Throughout it all, however, they policed the plains and “made” America. Real Country magazine staff writer and Old West Historian Alan Rockman separates the “wheat from the chaff” and reality from romanticism in 40 Miles a Day on Beans and Hay, with stories that are both familiar and, yet, still quite surprising. Rockman was an active volunteer at the defunct Festival of the West and Dr. Buck Montgomery’s Wild Western Show. Until recently, he also managed the official Facebook page for Chris Hillman, a former band member of the Byrds and Flying Burrito Brothers.
