The domestication of horses is arguably among the most important achievements made by early humans, allowing for massive advancements in travel, hunting and combat. And recently, in a wide genomic study, researchers suggest they have identified when and where this revolution occurred, calling into question earlier theories about the history of horse husbandry. In a study published in the journal Nature, archaeologists used DNA analysis to trace horse domestication to roughly 2200 B.C.E.—about 1,000 years later than previously thought. But whatever the actual date and location of their taming, the horse’s formidable influence on the evolution of mankind is just one of the many reasons the Phippen Museum is proud to present our annual Hold Your Horses! Invitational Exhibition & Sale, dedicated to man’s loyal and hardworking companion.

Scheduled this year from Saturday, July 6th through Sunday, September 29th, this inspirational exhibit features western fine art from more than 40 talented artists from across the nation who are recognized for their outstanding ‘art of the horse’. And this year’s featured Hold Your Horses! artist is Julie Nighswonger, the People’s Choice Award Winner from 2023.

Nighswonger resides in Torrington, Wyoming, with her husband, Steve. She grew up in a rural setting connecting with her pets, livestock, and wildlife and the people that surrounded her. Nighswonger says, “This connection continues to be alive with the scenery, livestock and cowboy lifestyle inspiring me daily. My soul is nourished by all of the unique qualities the West has to offer.”

We thank our good friends at Haley Construction for generously sponsoring this year’s Hold Your Horses! Exhibition.
