This two-day workshop with local, award-winning artist, Bill Cramer, will cover the methods used to create plein air paintings. Emphasis will be placed on how to effectively translate the often complex 3-D landscape onto a 2-D plane through the careful use of composition, colors, values, shapes, edges, and textures. Taking and using reference photos will also be discussed. We will also explore the relationship between our plein air and studio work and focus on the idea that plein air painting is primarily about “learning to observe” and becoming an enthusiastic student of nature. This involves being an effective “land snorkeler” – one who explores the landscape for indispensa-ble information and fresh ideas. We’ll explore how our plein air and studio work can complement each other, each invigorating the other in a cyclical manner.

Further emphasis will be placed on the creative process, with the aim of creating paintings that go beyond strict representations of the landscape. Multiple demonstrations will be provided, complemented by individual attention and group learnin Students of all abilities are welcome, although all participants should have a basic familiarity with their chosen painting medium and plein air equipment. While all of the demonstrations will be done using traditional oil paints, Bill is familiar with the use of all mediums.
