Stories from Darrel Phippen

The Phippen Museum invites members and guests to a very special evening celebrating the life, art, and enduring legacy of one of the American West’s most influential artists. On Thursday, July 2, 2026, at 5:00 p.m., Darrell Phippen will present Stories from Darrell Phippen, an intimate gathering filled with personal recollections, family memories, and fascinating insights into the remarkable life of his father, George Phippen.
As co-founder and first president of the Cowboy Artists of America, George Phippen helped shape the landscape of contemporary Western art. Through his paintings and sculptures, he captured the spirit, character, and authenticity of the American West, leaving a legacy that continues to inspire artists and collectors today. Yet beyond public accomplishments was a devoted husband, father, mentor, and friend whose personal story is every bit as compelling as the art he created.
This special event serves as a perfect companion to the Museum’s current exhibition, Stories from the Saddle: The Art of George Phippen, providing visitors with a deeper understanding of the artist whose vision helped establish the Phippen Museum and whose work remains central to its mission.
During this exclusive evening, Darrell Phippen will guide guests through the exhibit and share treasured memories and behind-the-scenes stories that offer a rare glimpse into the man behind the artwork. Guests will hear firsthand accounts of George’s artistic journey, his passion for the West, and the experiences that influenced his celebrated career. The program will also include conversation and opportunities for attendees to engage with Darrell and learn more about the Phippen family legacy.
Guests will enjoy an exclusive evening event featuring an artisanal spread prepared by Greenway Catering & Events, along with delicious desserts from Nothing Bundt Cakes. So, whether you’re a longtime admirer of George Phippen’s artwork, a student of Western history, or simply someone who enjoys compelling stories about the people who shaped our cultural heritage, this promises to be an unforgettable, one-of-a-kind experience.
