In the Marley Gallery

This exhibition celebrates the rich tradition of Hispanic devotional art in the American Southwest. In remote frontier communities, faith and artistry intertwined, giving rise to the Santeros, skilled artisans who created retablos and bultos, painted plaques and sculpted images, to honor the sacred and sustain spiritual life. Drawn primarily from a private collection and complemented by treasures from the Phippen Museum’s permanent collection, these works reflect both spiritual aspiration and extraordinary craftsmanship. Each piece tells a story of a community sustained by faith, of artists who transformed scarcity and isolation into acts of devotion, and of a profound reverence for the sacred that continues to resonate today.
