Essence of the Animal with Shelly Hackett

🗓 February 27 | 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM
🖌 All experience levels welcome Price: $175 Members:$150

Step beyond simply painting what you see—and learn how to paint what you feel. In this immersive one-day workshop, artist Shelly Hackett invites you to explore the spirit, personality, and quiet power of animals through oil painting.

The day begins with gentle pencil sketching exercises to loosen up and help you connect with your subject. Shelly will guide you step by step, showing you how to move past copying a photograph and instead bring out mood, movement, and the unique essence that makes each animal unforgettable.

You’ll then bring your chosen subject to life on canvas—blocking in backgrounds, building rich layers of paint, and discovering how small artistic choices can reveal the heart of your animal. You’re welcome to paint along with Shelly’s demonstration image (recommended), or bring a photo of your own beloved horse, dog, or favorite wildlife companion.

All materials are included, so all you need to bring is yourself, a lunch or snack, and clothes you don’t mind getting a little paint on. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced painter, this workshop is designed to meet you where you are and help you create a piece that feels personal, expressive, and uniquely yours.
