SUMMARY:Stories from the Saddle: The Art of George Phippen a Retrospective Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: April 17th\, 2026 at 5:30 PM\, Members FREE\, Guests $20\nStories from the Saddle: The Art of George Phippen offers an intimate and expansive look at the life and artistic evolution of George Phippen\, one of the defining voices in Western art and the namesake of the Phippen Museum. Founded by Louise Phippen\, along with fellow artists\, family\, and friends\, the museum stands as a testament to his enduring influence.\n\nFeaturing more than 100 objects and artworks drawn from the Phippen Museum’s permanent collection\, generous private lenders\, and works and personal items from the family ranch in Skull Valley\, the exhibition traces Phippen’s journey from a young boy sculpting livestock from clay to a U.S. Army cartographer\, illustrator\, and ultimately a masterful fine artist.\n\nRather than focusing solely on finished works\, the exhibition emphasizes the experiences that shaped his artistic vision. Working in pen and ink\, watercolor\, oil\, and bronze\, Phippen was known for his meticulous attention to accuracy and his ability to capture vivid action and authentic detail. Visitors will encounter not only the accomplished artist\, but also the family man\, cowboy\, and visionary whose life in the American West informed his work.\n\nTimed to coincide with the Phippen Museum’s Western Art Show & Sale\, over Memorial Day weekend the exhibition celebrates Phippen’s legacy and invites audiences to connect more deeply with the man behind the art.
